“You cannot pour from an empty cup. Tending your own energy isn’t selfish — it’s how you stay well enough to keep going.”

The Big Idea
Reiki is a gentle, hands-on practice that works with the body’s natural capacity to relax, rebalance, and restore. A full Reiki session is something we do together — but the spirit of Reiki is something you can carry into every day.
At its heart, Reiki is about slowing down, coming back into your body, and meeting yourself with kindness. This guide gives you a handful of simple, grounding practices — inspired by Reiki’s traditional principles — that you can use anywhere, anytime, no training required.
The Five Reiki Precepts
Written by Reiki’s founder, Mikao Usui, these five simple lines are a daily compass for a calmer, kinder life. Read them each morning — the words “just for today” make them feel possible.
Just for today, I will not be angry.
Anger is natural — this is an invitation to let it pass through you rather than run you.
Just for today, I will not worry.
Worry lives in a future that hasn’t happened. Gently bring yourself back to right now.
Just for today, I will be grateful.
Notice one small good thing. Gratitude steadies the nervous system.
Just for today, I will do my work honestly.
Show up with integrity — for others, and for yourself.
Just for today, I will be kind to every living thing.
And that includes you. Kindness to yourself is not optional.
Signs Your Energy Needs Tending
Most of us push through and only notice we’re depleted once we’ve hit a wall. Learning to read the early signals lets you top up before you run dry. See which of these feel familiar:
Running on empty
Tired even after rest, or wired but exhausted.
Carrying tension in the body
A tight jaw, raised shoulders, a knot in the stomach.
Feeling scattered
Hard to focus, pulled in a dozen directions at once.
Emotionally flooded or numb
Either too much feeling, or a strange flatness.
Disconnected
A sense of being “up in your head” and far from your body.
A Simple Grounding Practice
When you feel scattered or overwhelmed, this two-minute practice brings you back into your body and the present moment. You can do it sitting, standing, or lying down.
- Plant your feet. Feel the floor beneath you. Let it hold your weight.
- Soften your breath. Breathe in for four, out for six. Make the out-breath longer.
- Scan your body. Travel from head to toe, gently unclenching wherever you’re holding on.
- Name five things. Notice five things you can see, four you can hear, three you can touch.
- Place a hand on your heart. Feel the warmth. Tell yourself: “Right now, in this moment, I am safe.”
Hands-On Self-Soothing
Reiki uses the gentle placing of hands to invite calm. You can offer this to yourself. There’s no technique to master — warmth, intention, and a few quiet breaths are enough.
- Hand on heart — for comfort and reassurance when you feel anxious or alone.
- Both hands on the belly — to settle a churning stomach and steady the breath.
- Hands cupping the face or forehead — to quieten a racing mind before sleep.
Rest your hands wherever feels right. Breathe slowly. Stay for as long as you like — even one minute counts.
Your Daily Energy Check-In
Print this page and keep it by your bed. A minute of honest reflection each evening helps you notice patterns and tend to yourself sooner. There are no wrong answers.
1. How is my energy right now? (0–10)
2. Where am I holding tension in my body?
3. What drained me today?
4. What restored me, even a little?
5. One kind thing I’ll do for myself tomorrow:
Go Gently With It
None of this needs to be done perfectly. The whole point is to soften, not to add another item to your to-do list. Pick one practice that appeals to you and let it be small and easy.
A few slow breaths and a hand on your heart, once a day, will do more than an elaborate routine you can’t keep up. Consistency beats intensity, every time.
When to Reach Out for Support
These practices are a gentle starting point. But you don’t have to carry it all on your own — please reach out if:
- You feel persistently drained, flat, or overwhelmed
- Stress or tension is affecting your sleep, body, or relationships
- You’re carrying something heavy and would value a calm, supportive space
- You simply want someone in your corner
A Reiki session is a beautiful way to truly rest and reset. That’s what I’m here for.
