Releasing the Past, Designing Your Future

A Time Line Therapy Starter Guide

“Your past is something that happened to you. It is not a life sentence. Once you understand how it shaped you, you can begin to choose differently.”

— Brian Whitchurch

The Big Idea

Time Line Therapy works with a simple truth: the way we feel and behave today is heavily shaped by experiences from our past — and by the meanings and beliefs we formed at the time. A difficult event doesn’t just pass; the conclusion we drew from it often stays, running quietly in the background for years.

The deep work of releasing those old emotions and beliefs is something we do together in session — gently and safely. But this guide will help you prepare: to understand the pattern, notice the beliefs holding you back, and start picturing the future you actually want.

How the Past Shapes the Present

Event

Something happens, often early in life

Meaning

We decide what it says about us or the world

Belief

That meaning hardens into a rule we live by

Behaviour

We act from that belief, often without knowing

The belief is the link in the chain we can change. When the old emotion and belief are released, the behaviour downstream shifts on its own.

Common Limiting Beliefs

These are some of the beliefs I hear most often. They’re rarely chosen consciously — they were formed long ago to keep us safe, and simply never got updated. See which ones ring true for you:

“I’m not good enough.”

The quiet belief that you must earn your worth, and never quite do.

“It’s not safe to trust.”

Often formed after being let down — it keeps people at arm’s length.

“I have to do it all myself.”

A belief that asking for help is weakness, so you carry everything alone.

“If I’m not in control, something bad will happen.”

Hyper-vigilance dressed up as responsibility. Exhausting to maintain.

“My past defines me.”

The sense that who you were is who you must always be.

“I don’t deserve good things.”

A belief that quietly sabotages success, rest, and joy.

Your Letting-Go Reflection

This is gentle preparation work — not the release itself. Print this page and work through it slowly. If anything feels too big to face alone, that’s exactly what our sessions are for.

  1. 1. The pattern

What feeling or reaction keeps showing up that you’d love to be free of?

  2. 2. The belief beneath it

If you trace it back, what do you believe about yourself or the world here?

  3. 3. What it has cost you

How has carrying this held you back — in work, relationships, or peace of mind?

  4. 4. What you’d rather believe

If the old belief simply let go, what would you choose to believe instead?

Designing a Compelling Future

Releasing the past makes room for something new. Time Line Therapy is just as much about your future as your past. Picture life twelve months from now, free of the old pattern:

  1. 1. What does it look like?

Describe a day in this future. What are you doing, and how does it feel?

  2. 2. How will you know you’re there?

What will you see, hear, and feel that tells you things have truly changed?

  3. 3. One small step you can take this week:

Go Gently With It

Be patient and kind with yourself as you reflect. These beliefs were formed for good reasons, often to protect a younger you. There’s no need to force anything or judge what comes up — simply noticing is a real and meaningful step.

You don’t have to dig into painful memories on your own. The purpose of this guide is awareness; the release itself is something we do together, safely and at your pace.

When to Reach Out for Support

This reflection is a powerful beginning. But the deepest change happens with support — please reach out if:

  • You feel stuck in the same patterns no matter how hard you try
  • Old emotions or memories feel heavy, raw, or overwhelming
  • You’re ready to release the past but don’t want to face it alone
  • You simply want someone in your corner

Time Line Therapy can create real, lasting change — often more quickly than people expect. That’s what I’m here for.
